"Doctors Hospital was the first hospital in the area to divide the medical staff into specialties and set up the on-call system so that the right kind of doctor would be alerted when there was an emergency. For example, an orthopedic surgeon would be called for a patient with bone injuries. This seems simple now, but it was a very progressive idea at the time."

DID YOU KNOW? Dr. Keene served as the medical chief of staff in 1980. To date, she is the only woman in any Laredo hospital to hold this post.

"We've come a long way since 1974, when I was one of only three cardiologists in the area. The hospital always supported adding cardiac services as new technology became available. For example, we had a mobile cardiac catheterization laboratory for years before the new cath lab was built. We're now developing a comprehensive cardiac program, which will include open-heart surgery and electrophysiology [treating electrical activity in the heart]."

"When I first started in the Emergency Department, we saw only five or six patients a day. Now we take care of an average of 65. The ED staff has remained fairly consistent over the years, and we all trust and like each other and work well together.
