H1N1 Flu: How You Can
Help Protect Your Family

Mother caring for sick childH1N1 influenza virus (initially known as swine flu) was first detected in the U.S. in April. Most people who get the flu (either seasonal or 2009 H1N1) will have mild illness, will not need medical care or antiviral drugs, and will recover in less than two weeks. Some people, however, are more likely to get flu complications that result in being hospitalized and occasionally result in death.

What do you need to know about H1N1, and how can you protect yourself? Here are some key facts to keep you and your family healthy.

Q: How Can I Help Prevent the Spread of Illness?

You can take these actions every day:
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. You could spread germs that way and become sick.
  • Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds and other social distancing measures. These measures will continue to be important as the 2009 H1N1 vaccine is distributed, because they can help prevent the spread of other viruses that cause respiratory infections.

Q: Who Should Be Vaccinated?

The CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has recommended that certain groups of the population receive the 2009 H1N1 vaccine:

These target groups include:

  • Pregnant women
  • People who live with or care for children younger than 6 months
  • Healthcare and emergency medical services personnel
  • People between the ages of 6 months and 24 years
  • People between the ages of 25 and 64 who are at higher risk for 2009 H1N1 because of chronic health disorders or compromised immune systems
